How this number is calculated
The tip is your bill amount multiplied by the tip percent you chose. The total is the bill plus any tax you entered plus the tip. If you're splitting the check, the tip and the total are each divided evenly by the number of people, giving a per-person tip and a per-person total.
How much should I tip?
"15-20%, pre-tax," per The Emily Post Institute's General Tipping Guide, on wait service at a sit-down restaurant. This calculator defaults to 18%, in the middle of that customary range, with quick buttons for 15, 18, 20, 22, and 25%. Tipping is a personal and regional custom, not a legal requirement, so treat this as a starting point, not a rule.
Tipping before or after tax
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common practice. Turn on "Tip on the pre-tax amount" and a separate tax field appears: enter your pre-tax bill in the bill field and the tax amount separately, and the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount only, with the tax added back in for the total. Leave the toggle off if you'd rather just tip on whatever single bill amount you enter, tax included or not.
What round-up does
Turning on "Round total up to the nearest dollar" increases the tip just enough that the total lands on a whole dollar amount, which some people prefer for a simpler cash payment or an easier split. It only ever rounds up, never down, so your tip never shrinks because of this option.
Automatic gratuity
Some restaurants automatically add a gratuity charge to the bill, most often for large parties. This calculator does not know whether your bill already includes an automatic gratuity; check your receipt before adding another tip on top, since this tool always calculates a tip as if none has been added yet.
A worked example
Leave the calculator on its defaults: a $60.00 bill at an 18% tip, split 1 way. The tip is $60.00 × 0.18 = $10.80, and the total is $60.00 + $10.80 = $70.80. Now say four friends split an $85.50 bill at a 20% tip: the tip is $85.50 × 0.20 = $17.10 and the total is $102.60; split 3 ways instead, each person owes $5.70 in tip and $34.20 total.
Methodology and sources
The tip equals the bill amount multiplied by the tip percent (as a decimal). The total equals the bill amount plus any tax entered plus the tip; tax defaults to zero and is only ever added to the total, never to the tip calculation, so tipping on the pre-tax amount versus tipping on a single all-in bill amount uses the same underlying formula, just with tax entered separately or left at zero. If a number of people is entered, the tip and the total are each divided evenly by that number for the per-person figures. If round-up is turned on, the tip is increased by whatever fraction of a dollar is needed so the total rounds up to the next whole dollar; it never rounds down.
