R-410A vs R-454B Refrigerant Comparison Field Guide
Why this comparison matters
R-410A has been the dominant residential HVAC refrigerant since the early 2000s, replacing R-22 (Freon). With R-410A's GWP of 2088, a single pound released to atmosphere is equivalent to releasing over a ton of CO2. The EPA AIM Act (American Innovation and Manufacturing Act, 42 USC 7675), enacted in 2020 and restricting new R-410A production as of January 1, 2025, is reshaping what refrigerant goes into new HVAC equipment.
R-454B, with a GWP of 466 (roughly 78% lower than R-410A), is the primary refrigerant used in new residential equipment manufactured for 2025 and beyond. R-454B is designated ASHRAE safety class A2L (slightly flammable), which requires new equipment designs, updated service training, and in some cases refrigerant leak detection systems. This calculator helps you understand the climate math and practical retrofit economics for your specific system.
Common mistakes
Assuming you must immediately convert an existing R-410A system. The AIM Act phasedown targets new production and import, not installed systems. Your existing R-410A equipment can continue operating with recovered and recycled refrigerant. However, R-410A scarcity premiums are expected to increase, especially in the 2028-2032 window, making long-term service cost projections important.
Assuming R-454B is a direct field-retrofit refrigerant for existing R-410A systems. It is not. New equipment designed for R-454B uses it from the factory. Retrofitting an existing R-410A system requires equipment specifically engineered and certified for A2L refrigerants, not a simple refrigerant swap.
Using GWP comparison to argue against equipment replacement when age and climate stress already argue for replacement. GWP math is one input. System age, climate zone, and compressor condition are equally important factors.
